Players hone their skills at hockey festival
Minihockey is a vehicle which facilitates more touches on the ball, encouraging passing and receiving.
It also creates tough game situations where players are forced to maintain possession and think under pressure, to make effective decisions and moves – an ideal learning environment.
Penryn hosted some of the independent schools at a hockey festival on Saturday. When these game situations and concepts are tested on the larger field, the young players feel as if they have more space and time to perform the skills effectively. They have also developed a better understanding of the game and how to read it and make intelligent decisions.
The emphasis is on the development of the players and no scores are recorded. The relaxed atmosphere made it most enjoyable for all. At these practices they learn the basics of the structure of the game and some very basic hockey skills. “We look forward to hosting more of these types of festivals in the future,” said Saranna Lourens of Penryn Prep Sport.
The next festival will take place at White River Primary this Saturday.
