Mbombela gets ready for a big walk

The Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation kicks off its Recreation Day celebrations at Mbomela Stadium today.

Get ready to work up a sweat. The Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation (DCSR) will be hosting a whole weekend of fun-filled activities this weekend.

Recreation Day has been developed by government to encourage the public to adopt a healthy lifestyle, while simultaneously seeing that it doesn’t cost a fortune in gym membership fees and private trainers to achieve it.

South Africans have one of the highest overweight and obesity rates in Sub-Saharan Africa. Seven out of 10 women and four out of 10 men have significantly more body fat than what is deemed healthy.

“Recreation Day came to being as a way of curbing overweight and obesity among the population. It will be an annual event held on the first Friday of October,” says the department’s Ms Sibongile Nkosi.

In support of this initiative, the department will host National Recreation Day at Mbombela Stadium on Friday.

It will see the people of Mbombela participate in various recreational activities such as marathon aerobics and tug of war.

The department encouraged employers to allow their employees to be part of the event.

As usual, DCSR aims to also use it as a vehicle to promote social cohesion.

“We have seen the power of sport to bring people together and we are confident that Recreation Day and the Big Walk will be catalysts for unity,” Nkosi concluded.

As part of the weekend’s activities, DCSR will present a five-kilometre Big Walk on Sunday. It will start and finish at Mbombela Stadium. It starts at 08:00.
