Their Squillos selfies are good as gold
SPAR spread the Interhigh 2016 spirit by giving away R30 000 worth of vouchers in its Squillos selfie competition.

MBOMBELA – To celebrate the camaraderie among the seven competing schools, SPAR donated three vouchers worth R10 000 each. One lucky school pupil, one parent and one school stood the chance of winning one of the vouchers.
A parent of a pupil at Hoërskool Lydenburg, Mohammed Qassim, received a phone call from the advertising controller of SPAR Lowveld, Amanda van Jaarsveld, on Tuesday. He was blown away.
“I was shocked and totally amazed. I didn’t event know about the competition. I was a volunteer at Interhigh on Saturday. As I walked through the thousands of supporters, a parent grabbed me on the arm and said ‘let’s take a selfie with Squillos,’ so it was actually a real joke to me. He only then told me about the competition. We saved the number and sent the selfie. When Van Jaarsveld phoned, at first I thought, ‘what, is this a joke?'” he said.
Qassim wants to give the voucher to an orphanage in Lydenburg.
Pupils were required to take a selfie with Squillos during his visit to their school in the run-up to the event, or on the day of the Interhigh.
Parents could also take a selfie with their child and Squillos to enter the competition.
Pupils could enter group selfies with Squillos, and enter their schools.
A grade 11 pupil at Lowveld High School, Simphiwe Shongwe’s selfie with Squillos caught the judges’ attention, and she was named the lucky winner.
“I was in class when I got the phone call and then they only phoned me after school. I was so excited and I couldn’t scream as I was in the car. I am going to give the voucher to my mom because I know myself, I will just misuse it,” she said.
Hoërskool Nelspruit’s Francois Esselen, Heunis Liversage and Wessel Gelderblom won the R10 000 voucher for their school.
