Athletes do Penryn proud
On Saturday February 20 the 16th annual Independent Schools Athletics meeting was held at Uplands College. It was hosted by Flamboyant.

The open girls 1 500 metres was the first event of the day and treated everyone to a wonderful start with Penryn Preparatory getting their first gold medal of the day.
The Penryn athletes excelled with Matete Mabaso first, Crystal Kellar third and Ainsli de Beer fourth.
The top-five athletes all broke the record in this event.
Mabaso then went on to win another gold medal in the 800 metres later that day.
Thereafter it was an array of podium positions and records broken by many of Penryn’s athletes. A huge effort by Bernica Lourens and Stephen Taylor who both broke the record in shot put, the latter by over a metre.
Another highlight was the open mixed relay team, which won a gold medal.
Most athletes reported that they got their personal best times or distances at this meeting.
It is safe to say that the short but tough season has paid off.
“Well done to every athlete who gave their all and to every coach for guiding the athletes to this point. Good luck to Bernica Lourens, Didi Mogane, Gary Lubisi and Livy Owen on being selected for the final Mpumalanga athletics trials this coming weekend in Secunda. We wish you well,” said Matt Reed, sports coordinator of Penryn Prep.
