Naughty Boys defend their Selati Cup title
The past weekend's Selati Cup fixtures provided great soccer entertainment for local fans.
The defending Selati Cup champions, Naughty Boys have defied the odds and successfully defended their title against Mawewe Chiefs.
The two sides met on Monday afternoon at the KaMaqhekeza Stadium for the 128 knockout fixture. Mawewe Chiefs came into the encounter as the underdogs, already being written off against the achieved and impressive Naughty Boys.
Five minutes into the game, the latter were living up to their reputation and heading for the match’s first goal with strikes from outside Mawewe Chiefs’ box, and a number of dangerous offside calls that left the goalkeeper exposed.
They settled down and started to fight back, but Naughty Boys’ backline was well prepared for any sight of an attack or attempt at a goal.
Twenty minutes after kick-off they were given a free kick right outside Mawewe Chiefs’ box, but Gugu Mathebula missed the goalpost by centimetres. Shortly after that, teammate Brilliant Shongwe delivered a magnificent strike from outside the box to open the scoring.
Naughty Boys continued to apply pressure on their opposition, who were leading their own attacks and were not giving the defenders a break.
After a short break, Mawewe Chiefs made a comeback and started to force Naughty Boys on the defence, working for ball possession in the midfield.
The teams went into the half-time break with Naughty Boys having one foot in the next round, but seemingly aware that the work was not yet entirely done.
In the second half, both sides fought for another goal. For Mawewe Chiefs, it would have meant coming back into the game and forcing it to penalties, while it would have extended Naughty Boys’ advantage.
The game ended with a score of 1-0 for Naughty Boys, who will be moving on to the next round of the Selati Cup.
