Local cycling club takes on double the challenge

The Modikwa Cycling Club had a busy weekend, hosting both a mountain-bike race at Swadini Forever Resort and a road race in Polokwane.

Torn as they were to choose between these two exhilarating events, Bev Rieck, one of the Modikwa club members decided to take on the mountain-bike race. “The race was held on Saturday near Hoedspruit. It was a very nice scenic route through the orchards, and luckily it was also not too crowded,” added Rieck.

The Annual Mayoral Cycle Race took place on Sunday in Polokwane where eight members of the Modikwa Cycle Club participated, namely Darren McDonald, Ilse McDonald, Helgaard Prins, Juanita Prins, André Duminy, Carine Duminy, Nicole Duminy and Reneilwe Nong.

These members opted for the 45-kilometre route and the team spirit was high. All eight completed the race well before the cut-off time, without any incidents or injuries. They each received a medal for their outstanding performance. The race was recorded and will be televised at a later stage.

“A special word of thanks must be extended to Modikwa Mine management and the sport club for their involvement in obtaining cycling kits for the members. The members were very proud to be wearing their new kits for the first time during the race and to represent Modikwa Mine at such a big event. Each cycle club member should also be thanked for the hours of training they put in every week and the effort they made to represent the mine at the various races they attend. Without the members there would be no cycling club” said Willem Montgomery from Modikwa Mine.
