The Selati Marathon keeps on growing in popularity after 27 years

Stretch your legs and make sure you have comfortable running shoes, for the annual Selati 2 in 1 Marathon on May 14.

Over a thousand athletes are expected at the starting line at the Malelane Rugby Club at 07:00 on May 14 for this popular race organised by the Onderberg Marathon Club.

Last year 1 054 athletes entered the marathon, compared to a mere 80 runners in 1989 and its popularity keeps growing.

Competitors have a choice between the 10km and a 21,1km race, while the younger or less fit athletes have a choice between the 2km or the 4,9km fun run presented by and for the benefit of Malelane Primary School. Last year, the fun run attracted 1 220 runners.

The route will be the same as last year, with more than 10km of the 21km route on the banks of the Crocodile River, overlooking the Kruger National Park, and skirting the green cane fields.

The 21km race’s route will lead runners past Fish Eagle Bend, a suburb of Malalane.

The water points after a real treat for tired runners and are manned by the different divisions of RCL Foods, as well as some business partners. This leads to serious competition for the title of best water point.

Sponsors, such as primary sponsor Selati Sugar (RCL Foods), hope to make the race unforgettable and total prize money of over R12 000 is a good indication of this.

The runners will also receive a unique race medal: in each of the distances the first 10 will get gold and the next 30 will receive silver medals. Fun-run participants will also receive a medal as well as a Selati string bag.

Electronic entries available on www.entrytime.com and entry forms available on www.prontocs.co.za.

Race numbers for the main races can be collected at the start at the Malelane Rugby Club from 16:00 to 19:00 on Friday May 13 and from 05:30 on race day. Late entries will also be accepted during that time.

Entry fees: R70 for 21km, R40 for 10km and R10 for the fun run. Temporary numbers are available at R25 each.

Timekeeping will be done by means of an electronic chip. The detailed results will be available shortly after the race at www.prontocs.co.za.

Enquires: Deon Valks on 082-788-0675 or selatirun@rclfoods.com or Marthinus Kelder on 084-581-6503.
