Penryn score 15 tries in 40 minutes
Last week Penryn College played their second winter league fixture against Curro Nelspruit on the latter's fields.
The medium-schools’rugby league allows the schools to play both a home- and away-fixture against the others. The first fixture is always interesting as it can set the tone for the second one, or the teams can learn from their mistakes and try to correct them before the next one. As Curro is a growing school, they only field an u/14, u/16 and first team in the league.
Both the u/14 and u/16 matches were closely contested in the first half, but Penryn’s junior teams lost focus and made too many unforced errors. The juniors from Curro took full advantage of this and created scoring opportunities which they rounded off very well. The Penryn junior teams have some work to do before the return fixture at Penryn on Saturday, May 14.
There was a lot of exitement for the first team match as last year Curro cancelled the fixture minutes before the match was about to start. Both team’s players were eager to get onto the field and finally test one another.
At Curro’s request, the match was shortened to 20 minutes a half, which Penryn fully utilised.
Their game plan was clearly to spread the ball wide and test the outside defence. Curro struggled with these attack as their defenders were too narrow and did not shift across to cover the field. Penryn scored a total of 15 tries in the match to win 98-0. “As the coach it is difficult to take too many positives from a one-sided match, but I am happy that our attacks were effective with good interplay among our players.
Credit must also go to the Curro players for never giving up and courageously tackling until the very end – it was a pleasure to see their boys’ fighting spirit. I believe Curro will continue to grow and develop in the future years,” said Graeme Stewart.
