Brave athletes tackle Boulders Road Race

Runners from across the Lowveld enjoyed breathtaking views of the Onderberg during the 10th annual Boulders 2-in-1 Road Race at Kaapmuiden last Saturday.

Almost 400 Lowveld runners had an early start on Heritage Day for the popular Boulders 2-in-1 Road Race.

Competitors in the 25km hopped on a shuttle at 05:00 to head to the Mara turn-off, with the starting gun sounding an hour later.

The route followed the Boulders Road over the mountain and through Crocodile Gorge Nature Conservancy, with several up- and downhill stretches making it quite challenging. The 10km-route started at Kaapmuiden Primary School and both races’ finishers were greeted with enthusiastic cheers from spectators at the finish line on the school sport grounds.

A total of 223 competitors participated in the 10km and 167 in the 25km, a large increase from the previous two years.

The race was hosted by Onderberg Marathon Club and The United Church Christ the King, with main sponsors RCL Foods Sugar and Milling, Laeveld Trekkers and Malalane Toyota.

Proceeds from T-shirt sales will be used for Bible distribution.

Volunteers from the church manned the tuck shop and ensured that competitors could replenish their energy with drinks and delicious boerewors rolls.
