Scintillating sailing satisfies skippers

Forest Sailing Club held a mini regatta at Da Gama Dam on Sunday.

It was attended by four classes of boats: keelers, lasers, dolphins and catamarans. After the sailors were done rigging their boats, a quick skippers’ meeting took place and the competitors were on the water.

They set off at 12:00.

It was a great start for everyone, and off to the first mark with boats heeling over up to the 30-degree angle and skippers leaning out to try present capsizing.

Around the first mark, with the wind playing along, they set out to the Hulala Lodge mark with only one keeler deciding to fly his spinnaker and play catch-up. Further up the field, the first boat rounded the mark and headed back, fighting the wind, to try and get to the third mark.

Around the next one to the second-last and then to the finish line, with the wind, blowing from all directions.

The first craft to finish was the Hobbie 14 of Hano van Rooyen, followed by the two lasers of Christine Theron and Arthur Rowell. Peter Bouwer (dolphin), placed third and next was the Hobbie 16 of Steve and Roelene Els.

Finally the three keelers finished with Ken Grossmith and crew John Watson (Pirate), Terry and Lizzy Grossmith (Pirate) and last but not least the commodore and his wife, Anthony and Zelda Theron.

Once everyone was ashore talking about the race and the great wind they had had, the next two races had to be canned, sadly, as the wind decided to leave a light breeze for the small boats.

“The little ones had fun on the water fishing and on their boats. With the braai going and the chatting, everyone settled down for lunch and had a good catch up chat,” said Anthony.

An upcoming event that the club plans to hold, is sailing every first and third weekend of the month.
Mini regattas will be held on the Sunday, with a New Year’s regatta and an Easter one also planned.
