Smit part of SA team for Gold Coast Commonwealth Games
SASCOC today named an 18-member cycling team to represent South Africa at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia from April 4 to 15.
Ashleigh Moolman Pasio, who excelled on the international stage last year, was the only woman selected for the road category.
Among the men Willie Smit, who also had a “breakaway” year in 2017, and Nicholas Dlamini, who won the King of the Mountains title at the Tour Down Under a week ago, were both selected.
Brendon Davids, who “struck twice” in November last year to secure a top Aussie contract, also made the cut for the tarmac.

Seven-time Paarl Boxing Day 25-mile winner Nolan Hoffman received the call-up to represent his country on the track, while David Maree, who won the “Devil” at the Paarl event last month, was also included.
Charlene du Preez, who lined up for her first two UCI Track Cycling World Cup events last year, will also be among the women competing.
Mariske Strauss, who won the elite race at the National MTB Cup Series last year, was selected for the mountain-bike discipline.
Alan Hatherly, who won silver at the u/23 UCI Mountain Bike World Champs last year, was the only man picked to race in the dirt.
