The best of the best

A wave of sound reverberated around Hoërskool Rob Ferreira's stadium as Nolwazi Mashaba broke a 33-year-old record on Saturday.

It was one of the highlights of the day at the 69th Mediclinic Nelspruit Interhigh.

The athlete from Lowveld High School, a one-time junior prodigy, rewrote the books when she placed first in the u/16 long jump event with a distance of 5,59 metres.

The previous long jump record was held by C Hattingh (5,55 metres).

Although this distance is not close to her personal best of 5,69 metres, she is still happy with her performance.

“I set a goal for myself ahead of interhigh to smash the record. And I did, which I am extremely proud of. “I can only learn from now on and I hope to set the bar even higher for myself in the next few months,” said Nolwazi.

Hoërskool Nelspruit’s Anje Nel also wrote her name in the programme record book, setting the record for girls u/14 high jump for the first time since 1988. After her third and last attempt, she cleared the 1,66-metre mark.

The day, however, belonged to Penryn College’s Zanele Chavangwane and Nelspruit’s Ruan Labuschagne.

Senior victrix ludorum, Zanele totalled 2 896 Absa points. She placed third in the 200 metres with a time of 27,98 (666), second in the 400 metres (738), fifth in long jump (4,46 metres) and took the gold medal in the 100 metres with a time of 12,74 seconds – worth 821 points. She was also presented with the best senior sprint trophy of the day.

A speedster from NHS, Ruan improved on his time in the 200 metres by 0,25 since the Waterkloof meeting a week ago, with a time of 22,41. He added three more gold medals to his name in the 400-metre hurdles (54,15 – 858), 100 metres (10,84 – 859) and 110-metre hurdles (14,88 – 783).

He was named senior victor ludorum.

Rob’s Vuyo Ndlovu set two records on Saturday. His time of 22,01 for boys u/16 in the 200-metre was worth 1 042 points on the Absa table – the highest number of points calculated by a boy athlete.

He crossed the 100-metre finish line in 10,85 seconds.
