Barberton’s athletes scoop 11 medals

Barberton accumulated 11 medals: two gold, six silver and three bronze.

Bandile Mabuza and Goitsemang Mahlangu were Barberton High School’s top-performing athletes at this year’s Mediclinic Nelspruit Interhigh.

Bandile competing in the boys u/16 100-metre race took home a silver medal, finishing mere split seconds behind Hoërskool Rob Ferreira’s speedster, Vuyo Ndlovu.

In the 200-metre race, Vuyo and Bandile again had a hard-fought battle for the gold medal. The athlete of Barberton had to settle for silver with a time of 22,98. His time is 920 points worth on the ABSA table.

Goitsemang competing in the boys u/16 800-metre race placed second with a time of 52,92 narrowly missing out on a gold medal.

Corlia van der Merwe (u/19), competing in the javelin event, bagged a silver medal with Jamie-Ann Panter continuing the school’s solid performance in javelin events by earning a gold in the girls u/15 event.

Working hard to perform in the field events, Tyrese Sanderson in the u/14 boys high jump event rounded off the podium, taking third place.

Sakitsi Mthunywa, took gold in the girls u/15 high-jump event, beating her closest competitor by more than five centimetres.

In the boys u/14 shot put, Adriaan Havenga boasted a bronze medal.
