Year’s rugby season kicks off
Hoërskool Bergvlam's first rugby team got off to a great start ahead of the season after they beat Penryn College by one point during the Mbombela Stadium Rugby Challenge, hosted by the latter, on Friday.

Bergvlam’s Austen Vermeulen scored in the dying seconds of the match to clinch the game 26-25. Shandro van Rensburg and his team trailed 25-7 at half-time.
From the start of the game the Penryn boys were clearly the dominant side on the field. The first points came from the boot of the flyhalf Ryan Hood kicking a penalty.

For the remainder of the second half, most of the possession and territory belonged to Penryn. This resulted in tries from Jason Mantel and Sebukwe Ngwenya. The opposing team also responded well with a try and conversion making the score 22-7 in favour of Penryn. Soon before half-time Bergvlam’s tight head prop got sent off the field with a red card for a dangerous and illegal tackle.
This supposedly gave Penryn an advantage but Bergvlam fought back bravely, scoring another brace of tries with conversions.
For the last five minutes the hosts were persisting a breakthrough in the Bergvlam half, but just could not capitalise the possession into points.
