Weweje’s goal evens the score

Playing on their home turf at the Valencia Ringball courts, team Nelspruit took early possession of the ball, forcing the women from Barberton to play a defensive game for most of the first half, and finishing with a half-time score of 15-8 to Nelspruit.

Team Barberton, however, rallied in the second half, managing to claw back much-needed points, besting their opponents with a score of 25-24 in the last few minutes of the game.

In a last-ditch effort Nelspruit’s Elisha Weweje managed to bag a goal during the final minute of play, ending the game on a draw, 25-25.

In a mixed game between Barberton and Nelspruit, featuring the best players from both clubs’ men and women’s sides, team Nelspruit was unable to keep up the pace with Barberton’s fast and aggressive play. Barberton was crowned champions, with a final score of 34-2.

Their coach, Martine Jooste, said he is very excited for the remainder of the season and happy to see a growing interest in the sport among younger players.

Marius van Jaarsveld, team Nelspruit’s coach, said he was pleased with the women team’s performance and that he is looking forward to a lively ringball season this year. “We have been gaining momentum and more players have been joining our local teams, allowing us to expand and get more people involved and excited about a truly South African sport,” he said.
