Malelane cricketers celebrate a highly successful season

The Malelane Cricket Club celebrated an excellent season at their year-end function at the Riverside Lapa on Saturday evening.

The Malelane Cricket Club has experienced a surge in interest and support over the past year and there was great camaraderie among the members.

The Malelane Masters XI cricket team kicked off the season with the Ehlanzeni Promo T20 League in October. They finished first in their pool in the 20 Over competition and were overall second in the league. They won the Promo Saturday Playoff after a victory against the Impalas Second Team. and were second in the Sunday Promo League following a loss against the Warriors from Mbombela.

In the 40 Over competition, they finished second in their pool and fifth overall in the Ehlanzeni Promo League. They finished overall third in the Ehlanzeni Promo Saturday League.

Club chairman Ernst Zeelie reminisced about some of the season’s best moments and thanked players for their interest and hard work.

Several awards were handed out. Pieter Huyseman was named the Georg Muller Stirrer.  Best batsman went to Carel van der Westhuizen, best bowler to Waldo Freese and best fielder and Degswa Players’ player of the year to Pierre Fourie.

Schalk Potgieter was awarded the Wensley Petzer Moment of the Year and Shayne Adcock was thanked for his efforts in keeping the club going with the award for clubman of the year.

Jan-Adam van der Westhuizen was honoured as the Shaun Petzer Cricketer of the Year.

During cricket season, the club practices from 18:00 to 20:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at MSD Farms and Wednesdays at Riverview Prep from 16:30 to 18:00.
