Hoërskool Kanonkop recently travelled to Mbombela to test their mettle against Lowveld High School on their home ground.
Though they were greeted by a wet and cold day, it did not keep them from playing good old running rugby. The u/14s kicked off the day with a fantastic, nail-biting game. Both teams gave it their all, but in the end it was Lowveld High that snatched the game, scoring a try in the dying minutes to take the 19-15 win over Kanonkop.
The u/15s, however, had a very tough day and even though they tried their utmost, suffered a 48-0 defeat. In another nail-biter, the u/16s just fell short of victory. With the score tied at 14-14 with one minute left on the clock, Kanonkop sent a penalty through the posts and added three points to the scoreboard.
They took a 17-14 win. Only seven points were scored in the clash between the second teams. Kanonkop was the first and only team to pay a visit behind the try line and successfully converted their try. They went on to take a 7-0 win over Lowveld High.
Though LHS’ first team led the match 10-7 in the first half, the wheels came off in the second. Kanonkop’s counter-attack led to two quick tries in succession, and even though the local team managed to intercept a pass and score a try, it was just consolation. They lost the
game 33-20.
