Venom Lures weigh the heaviest bag
After three rounds, Team Venom Lures tops the Lowveld Bass Trail (LBT) log after yet another strong performance at Kwena Dam on Saturday.
The team consisting of Frank and Ben Gottschalk weighed a bag of 9,24kg – the heaviest of the season so far.
In total 27 (52,94%) of the 51 teams that entered managed to weigh in five fish and three (5,88%) teams blanked. A whopping 189 fish were weighed in with a total weight of 148,211kg – an average weight of 0,784kg per fish.
Winning patterns
Spinnerbaits and soft plastics proved to be successful in finding the limit of five fish.
The Gottschalk duo concentrated on isolated submerged grass patches in two-to five-metre water fishing with flukes, squarebill crankbaits and getting their larger fish on spinnerbaits.
Second-placed Team Midas Sport of Adriaan Bam and Johan Coetzee had an exciting start to the day missing two massive fish on Zara Spooks early in the morning, reverting back to plastic lures a while later. They had a tough day and started throwing spinnerbaits by midday as they noted the bait fish in the shallow water. They quickly found good-quality fish in two feet of water and suspended in isolated grass between reeds.
Team Salmo Lures of Morné Strauss and Shaun Fredriksson placed third on the day, but also report to have struggled for a major part of the day landing fish on spinnerbaits and speed craws. As the frontal weather moved in, they upgraded their bag with flukes while the fish were starting to feed more aggressively. Wayne Lawrenson of team Bass Brothers weighed in the greatest fish of the 2018 LBT season so far. A fat, bucket-mouth monster of 3,73kg claiming the epic fish prize on the day.
