Nolwazi sets new record

Young Nolwazi Mashaba has established a new personal best distance of the season in the triple-jump pit at the CAA Southern Region u/20 Youth and u/18 Junior Championships at Boksburg Athletics Stadium last weekend.

MBOMBELA – The 16-year-old displayed tremendous talent for girls u/18 in the hop, skip and jump with a best effort of 12,93 metres, which earned her the silver medal.
She almost beat current South African champion, Gontse Morake who in her fourth attempt leapt a 13,10 metres.
“I am very pleased with my result. It was great being able to compete alongside Gontse and narrowly losing to her,” said the athlete of Lowveld High School.
Earlier this year, at the South African School Championships, she took gold with a distance of 12,32 metres for girls u/17 in the triple-jump event.

At the ASA u/18 and u/20 championships at Dal Josafat Stadium in Paarl, she bagged the silver medal with a distance of 12,46 metres. Gontse won the event with 12,74 metres.
Nolwazi was the only athlete from the province who has been invited by Athletics South Africa to represent her country at the CAA Southern Region championships and the first athlete since 2016. Maudas Banda (Hoërskool Bergvlam, long jump) was the last athlete to be selected to compete for SA at the event.
Nolwazi hopes that her distance will secure her a berth in the final team that will represent her country later this year.
Athletics South Africa will announce the teams that will compete at the IAAF World Juniour Championships in Finland, CAA Youth All Africa Games in Algiers, the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires and African Union Sport Council Region 5 u/20 Youth Games, in mid May.
