Bergvlam rugby steams ahead

The Noordvaal league continued on Tuesday with Curro Nelspruit taking on Uplands College at Uplands.

• Barberton High first rugby team still unbeaten

• KMI Airport Rhinos cause upset

A determined Curro team put some quality phases together that created space for their outside backs.

Here Curro had some strong runs, dominating the collisions and using slick handling to score three tries by Sizwe Sobantu (2) and Mongezi Mkhaba in the first half. Simphwe Mndawe converted all three tries.

Curro went into the break 19-5 up.

With some questionable substitutions from an enlarged Uplands bench, the second half was much more competitive with Uplands playing a narrow game moving the ball up field through their forwards that resulted in them scoring a solitary try.

The well-coached Curro team maintained their composure and were effective in defence, ending deserved 19-12 winners.

*Hoërskool Nelspruit’s KMI Airport Rhinos started their Virsekerbeker-campaign on a high note after beating rivals EG Jansen 34-28. This came as a relief after Nelspruit’s poor performance in the Tuks-skolereeks.

Wing of NHS, Anton van Eijk scored a hat-trick. The half-time score was 25-15 in Jansies’ favour. NHS managed to score 19 points in the second half. The team from Boksburg’s Dian Coetzee was sent off with a yellow card. They could only add three points in the second half.
