Chess takes centre stage
Charles Janson (15) of Hoërskool Nelspruit has been crowned the winner in the u/18 section of the TRAC Curro Chess Age Open Tournament on Saturday.

It took a new level of strategy as it was a hard-fought battle for the first and third positions.
During the last and final rounds, Charles was up against Hoërskool Rob Ferreira’s Johan Odendaal.
It was a closely contested encounter till the end but it was Charles who took top honours when all was said and done.
The top-three players’ positions in the u/18 section, Charles, Marcel Barnard and Johan, had to be determined by tie-breaks as they were victorious in four out of their five rounds played.
The tournament attracted 210 players.
“Thank you to Curro Nelspruit and its sponsor, TRAC, for hosting a wonderful tournament. Also a special thank you to parents and teachers who make the effort to bring the kids to play, we appreciate you. Also thank you to all the players who participated – you are the reason we are here,” said Lizelle Douglass of Ehlanzeni Chess.
Next up is the Bohlabela Development Tournament on June 30. The venue has yet to be announced. Laerskool Malelane will host the next age open tournament on July 21.
