Dillon, Megan top mountain bike log

Hoërskool Nelspruit's Dillon Botha outsprinted Jean-Pierre Visagie of Uplands College in the sub-junior boys' category of the second-last league of the Spur School Mountain Bike League at Penryn College on Saturday.

Dillon opened a 28-second lead after the first lap. Jean-Pierre managed to close the gap over the second leg, trailing by six seconds.

The product of NHS managed to take the gold medal by a mere 18 seconds to finish in 35 minutes and 34 seconds. Laerskool Nelspruit’s Megan Botha is still the front runner in the sprog girls’ category. It was a dominant win for Megan, completing the race in 25 minutes and 57 seconds.

Hoërskool Lydenburg had two podium place finishes in the youth female category, with Bernice van Wyk and Simone van Wyk battling it out for the gold and silver medal.

Bernice finished just over a minute ahead of Simone.

Hijke Coetzee of Hoërskool Nelspruit had to once again settle for bronze as she also was the third-placed finisher in the third leg of the series which took place at Uplands College.

The race of the day however belonged to the youth male riders Reinhart Viljoen and Jean du Plessis.

These two riders have been one of the most exciting in the series after fighting for the two top spots.

At Uplands Reinhardt took top honours with a time of 48:46 and Jean completed the four laps in 50,26.

On Saturday Jean gave Reinhart a hard time, narrowly missing out on the gold medal by
23 seconds.

Mankele will host the finals of the school series this coming Saturday.
