The cycling team of Hoërskool Lydenburg were crowned overall winners of the Spur Schools Mountain Bike League, at Mankele Mountain Bike Park on Saturday.
With a whopping 98 entries on the day, the winning trophy in the senior school’s category remains in Lydenburg’s lobby for the seventh consecutive year.

It was, however, not a easy win for the school. It came down to the last race to determine who, between them and Hoërskool Nelspruit, would take the spoils. In the junior schools division, it was Laerskool Secunda who reigned supreme.

The event was the final in the provincial series and showcased a record 560 junior riders from across Mpumalanga.
On the day, junior female rider Charne Howard from Curro Bankenveld, who was also singled out as the best junior female of the series, pipped Zandri Strydom from Hoërskool Rob Ferriera at the post despite the latter’s technical difficulty.
Zandri spent almost four minutes in the tech zone after her chain broke during the third lap. She, however, still managed to chase down Charne and fell just 37 seconds short of what would have been a remarkable win.
In the junior male division, Curro Nelspruit’s Emile Fourie took the spoils in 47 minutes and 55 seconds after five laps, beating the runner-up by more than four minutes. Emile also took a well-deserved overall series win with 70 points – only three points ahead of Lydeburg’s Rikus Booyens.
Lydenburg further showed what they were made of when Reinhart Viljoen won the overall youth male title, and Simone van Wyk won the female youth division.

The overall winner of the senior sub-junior division was Jooste Coetzee of Hoërskool Ligbron. The best senior sub-junior female of the series was Geane Engelbrecht of Hoërskool Secunda.
