Lowvelders welcome new sport

What started out as only a dream became a reality for local ice hockey club, the Nelspruit Razorbacks (NRB).

On Saturday, the club’s youngest member, Skyler Steyn, broke the ice, opening the first-of-its-kind event in the Lowveld.

It was organised and hosted by the rink in i’langa Mall in partnership with the NRB Ice Hockey Club.

It was an honour to host the visiting teams from the Highveld, the Forest Rats (FR) and the Grizzlies, who put up an action- packed show for the spectators who filled the rink over the weekend.

The opening night drew a spectacular crowd which set the standard for the games that followed. The players were cheered on in typical Lowveld style and a lot of the visitors mentioned that Gauteng crowds can learn a thing or two of how it is done in the Lowveld.

The skills and enthusiasm of the players both on and off the ice were thoroughly entertaining. All the games were of a high standard and lived up to ice hockey’s reputation of being the fastest team sport in the world.

NRB would like to thank Nick Beukes, the owner of the FR as well as the Grizzlies Ice Hockey Club and the entire ice hockey family for their commitment and participation.
