Uniswim’s athletes claim medals galore

Uniswim Nelspruit's Jetro Piso landed six gold medals at the two-day Mpumalanga Age Group 1 Gala, which was held at Van Riebeeck Park last weekend.

Mpumalanga Swim’s athlete of the year, Jetro picked up silverware in the 200-metre free, 800-metre free, 50-metre back, 100-metre free, 100-metre fly and 400-metre freestyle.

Jetro, however, settled for the silver medal in the 50-metre fly event with a time of 27,80 seconds. Teammate Jacey Bekker took gold with a time of 27,73.

Jacey also excelled with a first place in the 50-metre free.

Kayla Schefermann, also of Uniswim Nelspruit, is still a swimmer to be reckoned with in the 100-metre breast and 50-metre fly events. At the Sprint Gala she took gold in both. Over the weekend she yet again walked away as the top swimmer in both events.

Fourteen-year-old Brooklyn Croxon (Uniswim Nelspruit), who was named as the best individual swimmer in the 200-metre freestyle event during the provinces’ prize-giving ceremony, clocked a winning time of 2:10,20.

Brooklyn enjoyed podium place finishes in the 800-metre freestyle, 200-metre breast, 200-metre back and 400-metre freestyle.

This past weekend’s race served as trials for the team selection that will travel to Maputo.

The team that will represent Mpumalanga at the South African School Championships will be finalised after this weekend’s gala, which will also take place at Van Riebeeck Park.

LowMed will present the first series of the Open Water Swim at Longmere Dam on October 14.
