Van der Walt surprised by top 5 finish
Jamie van der Walt (photo) is a crown jewel in Mpumalanga's women's bodybuilding after placing fifth at the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) Gentle Giant Classics last week in Boksburg.
She competed in the beach bikini category for over 1,63 metres in what is seen as the greatest money show in Africa.
The 33-year-old was stunned when the judges called her name as she did not place at the South African Championships.
Van der Walt received her Gentle Giant Classic wild card at the IFBB Mpumalanga Provincials in August at the Ridge Casino, eMalahleni.
A week before the event in Boksburg, she fell ill and was contemplating to withdraw from the competition.
“My body was drained. The doctor booked me off for a week, but I was determined to compete in what was my biggest competition to date. The Gentle Giant Classics is much bigger than the South African Champs and it was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I could not say
no to.”
Van der Walt is already prepping for her first show at the beginning of next year.
“There is no time for cheating. I will, however, have a strawberry and cream waffle. It takes a lot of hard work to get in shape and I will need to tone my body even more.”
