Uniswim’s Erica claims two gold medals at CANA champs
It was a phenomenal start to the competition for the South African swimming team as they claimed four gold, two silver and two bronze medals during the opening two sessions of the CANA Zone 3 Swimming Championships in Khartoum, Sudan yesterday.
First in the water was 14 year old Kuhlekonke Mkhize, winning the gold medal in the 50m breaststroke with a fast 34,29, over a second ahead of Kenya’s Clyde Lwanga in 35,85 and Tanzania’s Christian Shirima in 36,31.
The 15-16 age group 50m breaststroke race saw Tully Njoroge (16) and Keagon Mnyaka (15) claim the gold and bronze, clocking 32,31 and 34,00, respectively, while the silver in the event went to Uganda’s Tendo Mukalazi in 32,88.
Mpumalanga’s Erica Sibande (15) claimed two gold medals, taking the top spots in the 800m freestyle in 1:04.99 and the 50m breaststroke in 44,16, while Leah Christie (13) walked away with the silver in her respective 50m breaststroke race in 38.04.
Lerato Thobeha (14) made her way to the medal podium on two occasions, scooping the silver in the 200m butterfly in 3:15,34 and the bronze in the 50m breaststroke in 38,23.
The CANA Zone 3 Swimming Championships continue Thursday.
