Matsulu crowned Reserve League champions

Matsulu played tight rugby, and their strong defence held the lines to deny Barberton anymore scoring opportunities.

The visiting Matsulu first team played Barberton’s second team on Saturday at Barberton Rugby Club. The two sides appeared to be evenly matched in a Phakisa Lowveld Mayors Reserve League match. The visitors made their intentions known from the first whistle and played aggressive rugby, not relinquishing the momentum they gained.

Barberton’s second team were in the fray, but lost the tightly contested match to a determined side who played to win. The final score was 10-12 in Matsulu’s favour after the Barbertonians managed to score only two tries throughout the match.

Their opposition played tight rugby, and their strong defence held the lines to deny Barberton anymore scoring opportunities. Matsulu proved to be quicker off the mark with players who controlled the ball well, giving them the edge to beat the home team.

Their strength in the scrums proved to be Barberton’s undoing as Matsulu drove forward on numerous occasions. This put Barberton on the back foot for much of the game, which did not change in the second half of the match.

The opposition was tougher on the day and their supporters’ cheers from the stands gave them the extra energy to take the match to Barberton. After the match was officially over, Matsulu lifted the trophy and were joined on the field by their fans in a victory celebration. Barberton’s second team finished as runners-up in a thrilling encounter which provided entertaining rugby for the local supporters.
