Curro Nelspruit tops the log
While athletes from schools across the country are playing the waiting game, Curro Sport has for the first time in history, launched an Inter-Curro virtual relay.
Curro Nelspruit Independent School has grabbed the baton with both hands and entered teams in each age group – u/10, u/12, u/14, u/16 and u/18 led by Ronald Msimango, head of sport at the high school. These athletes are pitting themselves against competitors from more than 40 Curro Schools countrywide.
The championship is currently in the second and final week and the Curro Nelspruit u/18 mixed team hold the fastest time of all age groups nationally. The team consisting of Gift Mhlongo, Katlego Maribe, Marni Swart and Erica Sibande ran four kilometres (4 x 1 000 metres), in a potentially unbeatable time of 12 minutes and 57 seconds. This is an average of 3,14 per kilometres.
Both the u/16 girls and boys of Curro Nelspruit, as well as the mixed team in the same age group, top their logs with respective times of 13,01, 24,29 and 13,50.
Teams have until tomorrow (Friday) to put their best foot forward to be crowned national champion. This week Curro entered a new u/14 boys team – Calvin Dias, Justin Dias, Neil van Aardt and Jared Mumby – hoping to prove that they have what it takes to top the log which is yet to have a leader – it is anyone’s game.
According Msimango, these speedsters registered their first time on Wednesday. “We will have to wait until Monday when the winner is announced, to see if their effort was enough,” he said.
“The 4x one kilometre must be run on the same day, and teams can consist of boys, girls or mixed. Curro staff have their own categories consisting of two men and two women,” he said. Currently the Fluffy Tigers (staff) of Curro Hazeldean High School tops the log with a very respectable 13,01.
