Moris Maiga of Bella’s Athletic Club finished 49th overall and 10th in the 40-to-49-year category at the 2023 Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town on Saturday.

Maiga was the first male Lowvelder to complete the 56km race and clocked a time of 03:39:38.

His average pace over the distance was 3.36 min per kilometre.

Surprise Khoza, running in the colours of the City of Mbombela Marathon Club, ran the race in 04:09:07 to claim 197th place overall.

Gijima Nkomazi’s Patrick Luphoko finished 411th in 04:30:31.

The first female Lowvelder to complete the ultramarathon was Sibongile Mthunywa of Nelspruit Marathon Club. Her time of 05:28:31 secured her 326th place overall and 110th place in the 40-to-49-year category.

Thandeka Hlatswayo of the City of Mbombela Marathon Club finished in 05:31:49 to claim 368th place overall.

Nedbank LVCC’s Schizelle Theron finished 463rd overall and 161st in the 40-to-49-year category.

Eighty Lowvelders from 16 clubs finished the 56km race.

A total of 10 040 race entries were received. Of these, 7 919 athletes finished the 2023 ultramarathon.

Jabulisile Thusi of SANDF Mpumalanga cut it fine, finishing in 06:59:05, just 55 seconds before the cut-off time.
