SA’s future swimming stars make a splash in the pool

The development gala will be remembered for its camaraderie, loads of smiles and laughs and the proverbial 'fun in the sun'.

Ehlanzeni District Swimming hosted a level 0 development gala at Lowveld High’s swimming pool on November 11.

“The aim of the day was to give the swimmers of Learn to Swim the opportunity to develop their technique and talent,” the district’s Bruce Macauley told Lowvelder.
“Learn to Swim is a subdivision at most clubs, which is funded by the Mpumalanga Swimming Federation.”

This is not the first such gala that the province has hosted, and will certainly also not be the last!

“Throughout these development meets, we hope to ignite the passion for swimming in youngsters.”

A total of 130 swimmers from numerous clubs and schools, as well as an array of age groups, competed on the day.

“For most children, a medal symbolises recognition and achievement, thus we decided to hang participation medals around each and every child’s neck. No one gets left out,” Macauley said. They gave out medals to the top three positions in each item and even had some lucky draws, too.

The day will be remembered for its camaraderie, loads of smiles and laughs and the proverbial ‘fun in the sun’.

“The beauty of a development gala like this is that all our district’s successful swimmers, those who go to the SAs or reach level 1 or 2, have all participated in a development gala somewhere in their lives. This is the first bucket of water that is thrown into the pool to get it to reach its full potential,” Macauley concluded.

Anyone who wants to join the Ehlanzeni District in its efforts to promote the sport, whether it be through volunteering or sponsorships, are welcome to contact Macauley on 079 883 7806.

“Get wet and get involved!”
