Judokas ready to take on the Commonwealth

Nelspruit Judo Club's Anthony Theron and Johannes Moolman have been selected to represent South Africa in the Commonwealth Judo Championships in Jaipur, India early November.

Building up to this has been years of hard training and taking part in several championships throughout the year.

The last championship they took part in was the national rankings in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, where Moolman came up second after fighting against the current top-ranked judoka.

Theron claimed the gold medal in his group by default.

Long hours of travelling and hard work at training always comes with rewards.

Head coach Thinus van Tonder said that he is so proud of his students and wishes them the best of luck with the final preparations.

“I am immensely proud of Anthony and Johannes. It is a great achievement and it will be super if they can bring home medals.”

Over 60 countries will travel to India, and the fighters know that the competition is going to be tough.

Moolman will be competing for masters age 40 to 44 over 100 kilograms while Anthony will take to the floor in the category for men 35 to 39 years, over 100 kilograms.

“We would like to send a call to all companies in the surrounding area by helping us to get the necessary funds for our trip. The costs marks about R50 000 per athlete. It is such an honour to be able to represent our country and we will wear the Protea colours with pride,” said the fighters.
