Athletes get revved up for the upcoming season at meeting

The preseason meeting is the ideal way for the athletes to keep fit and stay focused before the school holidays

The Lowveld High School sports field was awash with colour last week as athletes from a number of schools participated in a preseason athletics meeting.

The participating schools were Lowveld High School, Hoërskool Nelspruit, four athletes from Hoërskool Bergvlam and ten from Metropolitan College.

According to the athletics organiser at Hoërskool Rob Ferreira, Stefan van der Merwe, the preseason meet was mainly to get the athletes, who have been practicing for the past five or six weeks, on the go.

“Schools are closing within a few weeks’ time, and next term we will have a number of big athletics meetings in the cards, so we need to ensure the athletes are well prepared for the season ahead. We really would like to have a head start when the season gets underway, by giving the athletes the opportunity to ready themselves for the coming season.”

Van der Merwe’s counterpart, DP Badenhorst, added, “The concept is to kick off the preseason by giving the learners the opportunity to participate, in order to gauge whether any improvement has been made in terms of identifying where the challenges are, if any.”

Both are in agreement that the coming season has many surprises in store, so athletes should exercise regularly and keep their fitness levels up.
