Lydenburg athletes head off to national biathlon championships

Six young athletes have qualified to compete as part of the Mpumalanga biathlon team in the SA Biathlon Championships 2023.

They will represent the province on a national level in Stellenbosch on March 31 and April 1. Each age group competes in a different running and swimming distance, not exceeding 800m. The Laerskool Lydenburg athletes who were selected are Zoan (U11) and Zoe (U13) Janse van Vuuren, and Estevan (U11) and Giann (U15) Wessels. Syboné Hanekom (U17) attends Lydenburg Hoërskool and Darren Coetzee (U17) Estralita Special School. Darren will compete in the disability category.

All these athletes are underage and need to be accompanied by a legal guardian, which increases the costs. Parents are responsible for their own children’s transport, accommodation and registration fees. Funds are needed to assist them to make it possible for their children to compete. To help out, phone Rianda Wessels on 083 669 8538.
