Athletes from seven Lowveld schools to do battle at annual BUCO Interhigh at Barberton High School
Barberton High School, Hoërskool Bergvlam, Lowveld High School, Lydenburg High School, Hoërskool Nelspruit, Penryn College and Rob Ferreira High will continue their rivalry on the track and field.
After a year of planning and hard work, Barberton High School is ready to host the 2024 BUCO Lowveld Interhigh Athletics Meeting on Saturday.
Hoërskool Bergvlam, Lowveld High School, Lydenburg High School, Hoërskool Nelspruit, Penryn College and Rob Ferreira High School’s athletes’ team buses will leave their respective home towns well before dawn to travel to the beautiful gold mining village.

“To every athlete, supporter, helper and official from all the participating schools, I wish you the best for the day, and I know that you will have a fantastic day against the backdrop of the Makhonjwa Mountains in the beautiful town of Barberton,” said Willem Steyn, acting principal of Barberton High School.
The gates of Barberton High School will open at 04:00 and spectators are requested to be seated before 06:45 when the various schools’ athletics teams will commence with their march-pasts.

The cheerleaders’ entrances will be from 06:55 and 07:35, after which the official opening will take place. The athletics programme will start promptly at 08:00.
A total of 136 track and field items will take place.
The athletics will conclude at 17:00, after the much-anticipated boys U18 4x100m relay, after which the prize-giving will take place.
A large variety of food and beverages will be on sale during the day.
The longest-standing Interhigh record was set 49 years ago by Marna de Villiers of Barberton High School. She clocked 24.80 seconds in the girls U19 200m in 1975.
The second- and third-oldest records are both written behind the name of Riana Swart of Lydenburg High School. One stands at 12.30 seconds in the girls U15 100m in 1976, and the other 12 seconds flat in the girls U19 100m in 1979.

A pleasant 21ºC is expected is expected in Barberton when the meet commences. The mercury will rise rapidly, however, to a predicted 35ºC by early afternoon. It is also expected to be extremely humid.
• The R40 between between Mbombela and Barberton is expected to be extremely busy from 04:00 on Saturday, with the six visiting schools’ buses and spectators heading to the host school. R40 road users are advised drive cautiously and display patience. The road is again expected to be busy from 17:00 as the athletes, officials and spectators return home.
