School sport at its best at Rob’s 70th in White River
The rugby field, netball courts and hockey Astroturf were a hive of activity at Rob Ferreira on Saturday May 18.
Hoërskool Rob Ferreira’s first rugby team moved to the top of the SDC Noordvaal Cup Division 2 log after a comprehensive 58-10 defeat of Ferrum High School’s first rugby team on Saturday May 18.
The match was part of a sports day that celebrated the school’s 70th birthday.
The host school, Hoërskool Barberton, Ferrum High School and Komatipoort Akademie competed.
Both Rob and Ferrum were undefeated in the competition going into the game, and a close rugby match was expected.
The Rob Ferreira boys had other plans, and a pep talk by the Airlink Pumas’ coach, Jimmy Stonehouse, prior to the game created more motivation.
Rob went 8-0 up after 18 minutes before Ferrum could put their first points on the board, a three-point penalty goal.
A penalty try after a high tackle prevented a certain try, and a try just before the break gave Rob a 22-3 half-time lead.

A try apiece early in the second half took the score to 27-10.
Then the home team opened the floodgates. Rob ran in five tries in 20 minutes, attacking from all over the field and throwing caution to the wind. This high-risk rugby paid off as the Ferrum players became tired in the last quarter of the match.
Rob Ferreira was the better prepared and fitter team. The hard work on the training field paid off.
Ferrum could simply not match the intensity of the Rob boys.
