Cruickshanks and Theron team up to win submaster category at Vaal Canoe Race
This Lowvelder and his partner held their own on the Vaal River against much younger paddlers.
Lowvelder Piers Cruickshanks and his partner, Jacques Theron from the KZN Midlands, finished fourth overall and first in the submaster age category in the ADG Vaal River Race.
The two, who are old friends and have previously teamed up, paddled the two-day 70km event in five hours 19 minutes.
The ADG Vaal River Race marathon took place on Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24, and is recognised as the South African K2 (two-man kayak) River Championships, to identify the top achievers in river racing in SA.

Racers from throughout SA travelled to Gauteng to take on the challenge.
Race day 1 started at the Vaal Dam wall and finished at the Albatross Skiboat Club in Three Rivers, a distance of 32km. Day 2, a 37km stretch, started at Eden Manor below the Barrage and finished at Umfula Lodge.
Dabulamanzi Canoe Club’s Clinton Cook, who won the TRAC Croc Canoe Marathon on October 20, and Wayne Jacobs won the race in a time of five hours 16 minutes.
