Uplands gets the glory at Interhigh swim

Local high school swimmers are in top form and proved their dominance over the area’s best during last week’s interhigh school gala.

Uplands College hosted this year’s interhigh swimming gala at Van Riebeeck Park in Mbombela and proved to be too tough to beat.

Uplands finished second on the medals table with 57 to Hoërskool Nelspruit’s 60, but were crowned the winners with 801,5 points according to the place-point system. Hoërskool Nelspruit was second with 721,5 points and Penryn College was third place with 528,5 points. Hoërskool Rob Ferreira were placed fifth overall with 374 points.

Nelpruit and Uplands were in fierce competition throughout the day as proved in the 200-metre u/19 boys’ relay, but Uplands managed to finish first in a time of 01:51,93. Uplands’ star pupil was Landau van Rooyen, who won the boys u/15 200-metre individual medley, 50-metre fly and 50-metre freestyle and won a silver medal in the 100-metre freestyle.

Several Uplands pupils had record-breaking runs:

• Chad Hawley in 50-metre breaststroke with a time of 31:88

• Matthew Ives in 50-metre butterfly with a time of 28:53

• Lauren Ogg in 50-metre butterfly with 33:97 and 50-metre freestyle with 30:40

• Delano van Rooyen in 50-metre freestyle with 26:08.

Rob Ferreira’s swimmers managed to grab a total of 22 medals – eight gold, three silver and 11 bronze – for a fourth-place spot on the medal table. Some of the school’s top swimmers were Stefan Krieg , Ronin Melman, Franco Labuschagne and Charl Jacobs, who all walked away with more than one medal.

Penryn College was sixth on the medal table and won a total of 23 medals – one gold, eight silver and 14 bronze.
