Pumas’ Currie Cup run comes to bullish end

The Steval Pumas were bested by the Vodacom Blue Bulls with Warrick Gelant running circles around the Puma defense.

Warrick Gelant was instrumental in the Vodacom Blue Bulls turning the tide on the Steval Pumas at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night.

The Bulls scored eight tries to four in their 52-32 victory.

Gelant scored only one of the tries, but he stepped and weaved his way past numerous defenders to keep the Pumas defence guessing. He had a perfect partner in the late replacement Travis Ismaiel, who showed just how dangerous a runner he is.

The Pumas, outgunned by the Bulls three-quarters, never raised the white flag and fought right to the end.

They had the upper hand in the scrums for most of the game and their forwards never took a step back.

Gelant made a strong challenge for Springbok colours once again, and is the top try scorer in the Currie Cup.

Captain Burger Odendaal again impressed in midfield, with Johnny Kotzé the only back not to trouble the scorers.
Jannie Stander, Willie Engelbrecht, Selom Gavor and Frank Herne earned the Pumas a bonus point for four tries.
