Initiation schools cancelled once again

Limpopo’s House of Traditional Leaders' chairperson, Kgoshi Malesela Dikgale told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that the initiation season had been suspended due to the provincial Covid-19 vaccination programme roll-out not yet covering people of all ages.

BURGERSFORT – The Provincial Houses of Traditional Leaders in Mpumalanga and Limpopo have both resolved to suspend the 2021 initiation school season.

Limpopo’s House of Traditional Leaders’ chairperson, Kgoshi Malesela Dikgale told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that the initiation season had been suspended due to the provincial Covid-19 vaccination programme roll-out not yet covering people of all ages.

“Another reason is that the June school holidays have been shortened to only two weeks. We won’t have enough time to conduct our schools.

” Dikgale brushed off reports that they can host initiation schools in December. “That won’t happen, in December we have challenges with snakes, scorpions and other reptiles. “I can assure the people of Limpopo that our tradition and culture of conducting such schools won’t die. Corona will vanish and we will continue practising our culture.” Mpumalanga’s House of Traditional Leaders’ Inkosi Sandile Ngomane said they have already identified schools that are operating illegally and have issued them with warning letters. He said failure to adhere to the warning could lead to them being served with a court interdict.

He said, “To all those planning on running the schools, you are committing and illegal act and will face the full might of the law.” It is the second season in a row that circumcision schools have been cancelled in South Africa.
