Mashishing water interruptions not over yet

Residents have been experiencing a recurring shortage and interference with the supply of water since Wednesday September 8.

Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) said the water supply interruptions are due to the failure of the main water pump line.

The water supply to some areas has been restored but many residents, especially in Extension 6, are still struggling without water.

“For heaven’s sake, we are right in the middle of the pandemic and we don’t have water. How do they expect us to wash our hands if we don’t have water. We also need to cook and bath. This is totally unacceptable. We have been very patient,” said an anonymous resident.

He also said that TCLM should provide a schedule for when the water truck will be available.

“The contractor appointed to address the problem was forced to abandon the site after a group of locals approached the company and demanded a protection fee from him. This led to further delays in the restoration of water supply to the area. After subsequent engagements with the group by the contractor, repair work resumed and water was restored.

“Another breakdown on the same pump line complicated the original repair. These recurring interruptions have unfortunately led to an increased demand for water supply which the system cannot adequately meet. “High lying areas will continue to experience water supply shortages, especially during peak hours. The situation will, however, gradually improve with time,” said Themba Sibiya, communication and marketing manager.

TCLM said residents must remember that illegal water connections are also a burden on the system.

This leads to recurring water supply shortages.

“We, therefore, urge residents to use water sparingly and report illegal connections to the municipality. It is our collective responsibility to report all illegal activities, including the vandalism of public infrastructures,” said Sibiya.

The community is strongly urged to report illegal connections and meter tampering to the municipal call centre.
