Oral health promotion in local schools

The learners at St Thomas College we’re also taught the proper teeth brushing techniques and advised on right food suitable for their teeth to avoid dental decay.

BURGESFORT – “Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your teeth and gums” these were the words of Dr Tumi Raphela when she addressed the Grade R to Grade 3 learners at St Thomas College on Thursday.

Dr. Raphela and her team visited the school to offer oral health education and demonstration about teeth brushing methods as part of her social responsibility to our local community.

They also handed the learners some Colgate toothpaste and toothbrushes. The cosmetic dentist is currently busy engaging in oral health programs at local schools The team that visited St Thomas included an oral hygienist, dental therapist, cosmetic dentist and dental assistants.

“If your gums do hurt or bleed while brushing or flossing, or you are experiencing persistent bad breath, see your dentist. “ said the cosmetic dentist who qualified as a dentist in 2008 in Medunsa and later went on to further her studies in cosmetic dentistry at the University of Western Cape.

She is currently studying her Master degree in Restorative dentisty with the aim to improve her clinical skills and to keep updated about latest researches in the dental faculty, which will eventually help improve service delivery to her patients.

More than 450 pupils’ benefited from these lessons, all the kids were handed brochures on maintaining their teeth, Colgates and toothbrushes.

Dr Raphela and her team are currently offering free consultation to all age groups in her rooms in order to promote oral health awareness from September till end of October.

Their goal is to bring premium dental care to the local community at an affordable fee. Their services includes; Laser teeth whitening, Braces, Laser gum reduction, Veneers, Implants, Washing and polishing of teeth, Chrome cobalt false teeth, Closing of gaps,Treatment of bad breath and bleeding gums.
