Nine tips to help you save on fuel
Frowning at the fuel price will not gain you more kilometres per litre but these fuel saving tips might.
Frowning at how government determines the final price – well, that is a different kettle of fish altogether. But then there really is not much that one can do about that either. Even if we were to all swap our cars for bicycles or motorcycles – which, just by the way, is impractical for most of us – will it solve our transport challenges?
So how does one extract the maximum kilometres from every litre of fuel?
Plan your trips
You can save fuel by planning your trips to be more productive. Those quick trips to the corner shop for chocolate chip cookies – cut them out. Apply the two-birds-with-one-stone principle to save fuel.
Travel light
Yes, get rid of those bicycle and roof racks unless you use it every day. Large wheels and custom rims do make your car or bakkie stand out, but it will increase fuel consumption.
It is cool to be smooth
There is no need to vroom-vroom and then whack down the accelerator between traffic lights to impress the blonde in the Suzuki. The smoother you accelerate and shift gears to stay within the “green band” on your rev counter, the less fuel you will use.
Pre-empt possible traffic congestion
Put the mobile in your trunk and keep your eyes on the road. This will prevent sudden drastic breaking or acceleration and will allow you to drive at constant speeds which will – yes – it will – lower your fuel consumption.
If it idles – it uses fuel
Start your engine and drive off. Consider switching it off in heavy traffic to prevent idle idling.
Take your car to the gym
Regular servicing – balanced tyres and 100% wheel alignment, will lower fuel consumption.
Air conditioning will cost you
Less use of the air conditioner, can save you as much as 10% on fuel expenses.
Do not speed
Other than saving you on bribe money, it will save fuel. At a 120km per hour, a vehicle uses about 20% more fuel than at 100km per hour.
Keep the wind in your tyres
The correct tyre pressure is critical in reducing resistance and thus – saving fuel.
