Lion sighting near KaNyamazane prompts school closure

MTPA teams are on high alert in the Krokodilpoort Nature Reserve area as the search for a young male lion has ensued.

A young male lion was spotted on Tuesday evening, May 5, near the Krokodilpoort Nature Reserve outside KaNyamazane, leading to the immediate suspension of classes at a nearby farm school.
The predator was sighted at about 18:00, roughly one and a half kilometres from the fence of the Frances Montessori Farm School.

Given the proximity of the sighting, the school has confirmed it will halt all operations on Wednesday, May 6, as a precautionary measure.
The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) confirmed that, while no further sightings have been reported since Tuesday evening, a specialised field team remains on high alert and is ready to deploy if the animal is located.

Residents and farm workers in the area are urged to remain vigilant, especially during early morning and late evening hours.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the lion escaped from a specific protected area or is moving naturally through reserve corridors.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as the MTPA and school officials share more information.
