Political heads from the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) have conducted an oversight visit to the Ga-Mokgotho Road Construction Project to address ongoing delays and monitor progress.

The August 8 visit was aimed at ensuring the timely delivery of one of the municipality’s key road infrastructure projects.

The inspection followed a series of previous visits undertaken by the municipality to monitor implementation, address project challenges and ensure contractors meet their contractual obligations.
FTLM Mayor Eddie Maila conducted a walkabout of the construction site to inspect the quality of work and verify physical progress on the ground.

Contractual interventions demanded

Addressing the project team, Maila advised the project management unit to urgently engage with the contractor to thoroughly assess the causes of continued delays and determine appropriate contractual interventions.
He stressed that prolonged work stoppages and slow progress cannot be allowed to compromise the delivery of essential infrastructure to communities.

“Our communities have waited long enough for these roads. While we acknowledge the challenges that have been experienced, residents deserve visible progress and completed infrastructure. The municipality will continue to exercise strict oversight to ensure this happens.”

He said the municipality remains committed to strengthening oversight of all capital infrastructure projects to ensure accountability, value for money and the timely delivery of quality services that improve the lives of residents.

Timeline extended to 2027

The 6km Ga-Mokgotho road is expected to ease pressure on motorists and pedestrians who had to traverse difficult terrain to reach homes and other areas.

When the project was announced in July 2025, Kgoshi Setlamorago “Ngoato” Thobejane of the Mafefe Tribal Council applauded the FTLM for the construction of the road, saying it would improve the living conditions of residents.

“Road infrastructure is an enabler for economic growth and must be embraced by all.”

The project was initially estimated to be completed within 12 months, but due to delays caused by heavy rains between November and January, the deadline has been extended to early 2027.
