Residents demand tar as province regravels D2405

The problematic road has been a concern for motorists and locals since the past decade.

Instead of upgrading the D2405 from gravel to tar, the Limpopo government is continuing to regravel the road linking Alverton and Kgautswane village. More gravel was delivered to the road on October 7, prompting backlash from Kgautswane residents on the Limpopo Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure’s Facebook page.

A post on the department’s page stated that its Dikgerekgere Wednesdays initiative was under way on the D2405, which connects Kgautswane to Alverton in the Fetakgomo-Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM).

“The ongoing work reflects the commitment to improving road infrastructure, strengthening connectivity between communities and ensuring that roads remain accessible and safe for motorists and residents,” the post read.
Public works MEC Tonny Ernest Rachoene said the department was continuing to make the province’s roads drivable.
However, residents called for a permanent solution to the road’s poor condition.

“We respectfully urge the municipality to prioritise the proper upgrading and tarring of the D2405,” posted Mashoto Tjatji. “Our community deserves sustainable development, not temporary fixes. We hope to see a clear plan and meaningful action that will benefit residents for years to come.”

Another resident, Retshepile Mnisi, said: “With all due respect, we need tarred roads, not more soil. Please take the Kgautswane community seriously for once. We continue to face unresolved issues, including water shortages, poor road conditions, and inadequate management at the clinic. Yet you expect us to vote for you – for what, exactly?”

The dispute over the D2405 has persisted for years. Residents have staged protests and, in 2020, more than 1 000 people signed a petition demanding that the road be upgraded from gravel to tar.

Over the years, the Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) and the provincial public works department have made commitments concerning improvements to the road.

In November 2022, RAL announced that a meeting was under way to introduce the appointed consulting engineer for the D2405 in Kgautswane. RAL and the public works department were leading the proceedings in the FTLM within the Sekhukhune District.

On November 10, 2025, Rachoene said the Dikgerekgere Wednesdays team would be sent to work on gravel roads, including the D2405.

He added that upgrades would be considered in future financial years because the road was among those already designed.
Rachoene made the commitment after a community engagement meeting with a delegation from Kgautswane, which raised concerns about the road and called for it to be upgraded.
