“We are travelling from Pietermaritzburg to Malawi,” said the one driver, Mr Mohammed Otias. The two trucks were parked next to the road.
The second driver, Mr Benandi Benandi, went to buy spares to fix the truck so that they can continue with their journey.
Video:
The trucks were extremely overloaded with beds, furniture, tyres, clothes, 20 litre bottles of water and petrol and apparently people too, as the truck driver was reluctant to open the cover.

Mr Otias claims to only have three people travelling with him and another three on the other truck.
Inside one truck was a very sick man with his pregnant wife and child on her back.
When asked if these loads were not dangerous he laughed and said it is safe and he has been doing it for years.
