WATCH: Quantam syndicate breaks into Fortuner

The gang of criminals travelling around in a white Quantum minibus, that resembles a taxi, has been caught on CCTV breaking into a Toyota Fortuner.

Clear video footage shows a minibus with a mining light on its roof and reflective strips on its side, stopping in the parking area near the Middelburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Friday night just before 20:00.

Four suspects climb out of the vehicle and separate from each other, with two scouting other vehicles in the parking lot, while the other two smash the Toyota Fortuner’s window.

The break-in takes place four minutes before another smash-and-grab of an Isuzu bakkie, where a camera of R40 000 was stolen.

Ms. Nicolene Breytenbach, the owner of the Isuzu that was also broken into by the same gang, confirmed the incident at roughly 19:55 on the Friday evening.

She told the Middelburg Observer that a case was opened at the Middelburg Police Station the following Saturday morning and that the CCTV footage was handed over to the police.

“I received an SMS on Sunday stating that the case had been closed due to a lack of evidence.”

Staff members at MCCI previously told the Middelburg Observer that they suspect a third vehicle was also broken into over the weekend, after more shattered glass pieces were found in the parking lot on Sunday.

• It was also pointed out that the Quantum fits the same description of that involved in a residential break-in in Sangiro Street over the same weekend.

The Quantum involved in both incidents shows reflective strips on the side, flickering reverse lights, and contains at least eight occupants – four of which climb out to commit the thefts.

“Even the driving behaviour in the two incidents are similar.”
