Cyclist stabbed at Tarries course

The popular MTB track that is meant to be a recreational area for cyclists has seen several violent robberies committed by bush dwellers.

A female cyclist was stabbed and robbed of her bicycle while riding on the Tarries MTB course in Aerorand this morning.

The news was shared on cycling WhatsApp groups earlier by the cyclist’s friend who was with her at the time of the robbery.

It was reliably learned that the attackers managed to make off with the victim’s bicycle and that the woman was rushed to Life Midmed Hospital for treatment.

The victim, however, is not in a life-threatening condition.

The identities of the two women who were accosted is known to the Middelburg Observer, but could not be reached for comment.

This incident is one of several in which residents have been attacked or assaulted during robberies on the Aerorand course.

The sub-wooded area surrounding the course offers shelter to many bush dwellers, who are believed to be behind these attacks.

The Steve Tshwete Local Municipality was approached by residents to address the dwellers but nothing has since come from residents’ efforts to combat crime in the area.

The Tarries course is also a popular location for provincial MTB School leagues.
