Dog poisonings on the rise

Aerorand and Extension 18 have recently come under the attack of dog poisoners, with three dogs dead in two weeks.

Ms Sibonisiwe Lwinga from Shale Street, Ext. 18 told the Middelburg Observer that her dog was found poisoned two weeks ago.
The family’s beloved pet was a crossbreed between a St. Bernard and a Rottweiler, and was pregnant at the time.

Ms Lwinga said she had searched for Muffin for three days after she had gone missing, “I had plans to leave the country, when Muffin went missing three days before. After our search was unsuccessful, I reported the matter to the SPCA and eventually had to leave the country. The day I had left, my neighbour called to say that they had found Muffin’s carcass.”

Ms. Lwinga is convinced that Muffin had been poisoned because her tongue was green and her faecal matter black.

“She was found near a tavern one street down from our house, in a location that I had already searched for her. I think someone dumped her there afterwards.”

Ms. Lwinga suspects that Muffin was poisoned because community members were frightened of her.

“Muffin often jumped the wall, which scared a lot of people. She was a friendly dog and not aggressive but people were scared of her size.”

She added that her children were devastated to learn of Muffin’s poisoning.

“We have two dogs, and now I have to keep a close eye on the other one to make sure it doesn’t also get poisoned.”

• Muffin’s poisoning was followed by the poisoning of two Huskies in Sondagsrivier Street, Aerorand on Tuesday.

The poisoning of dogs in Middelburg is often linked to break-ins and the theft of motorcycles.
